Trust Federations enable multiple identity and service provider institutions to collaborate with each other in a shared, secure and trusted manner. Here is a copyrighted animation from JISC that explains trust federations in detail.
Shibboleth/SAML services (IdP and SP) have been deployed in bilateral mode as well as large scale multi-institution collaborative federations. The London School of Economics and Political Science initiated the formation of a Shibboleth based trust federation called ShibboLEAP that includes six large partner institutions. The federation will provide shared access to academic publications and documents and will include Identity Provider and Service Providers from each partner institutions. |

A new access management system is under development within the JISC UK Federation, and will be available for full production use by September 2006.
